Lipoedema Lipedema: Nourish Your Gut – Natural Strategies for Women

by | Apr 23, 2024 | gut health, womens health

As a Naturopath and Nutritionist specialising in women’s health, I have a strong interest in lipoedema/lipedema. I understand the struggles faced by many women who experience unexplained weight gain, swelling, and discomfort, particularly in their legs. For those diagnosed with lipoedema, or even suspecting it, finding solutions and support can be challenging.

A Note on Spelling: You may have noticed both “lipoedema” and “lipedema” used within this blog. These are simply regional variations for the same condition. The Australian spelling is “lipoedema,” which I’ll be using for the rest of this post.

Lipoedema: More Than Meets the Eye

Recent research emphasises that lipoedema is a chronic disease characterised by abnormal fat distribution and, importantly, the progressive loss of muscle function (1). While obesity may develop later, it’s important to understand that lipoedema is not initially caused by weight gain. Scientists are still uncovering the root causes, but evidence suggests it involves a blend of genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, and inflammation (2).

Did You Know? Many women with lipoedema don’t realise they have this condition. If you’ve struggled with weight gain in your hips, legs, and thighs – especially if it started during hormonal shifts like puberty, pregnancy, or menopause – lipoedema could be a factor.

What is Lipoedema?

Lipoedema primarily affects the legs, hips, and sometimes the arms, leading to uneven fat distribution that’s distinct from regular weight gain or obesity. Frustratingly, lipoedema is often misdiagnosed, or written off as needing more diet and exercise – particularly in women in their 40s and 50s, according to a survey (2).

Signs & Symptoms

  • Persistent heaviness and tenderness in the legs, often worsening in the evening.
  • Easy bruising or sensitivity to touch.
  • Legs feel disproportionate to the upper body.
  • Difficulty losing weight in affected areas, despite diet and exercise.
  • Skin may have a ‘cottage cheese’ or ‘orange peel’ texture.
  • For some women, symptoms worsen around hormonal fluctuations

The Impact of Lipoedema

Living with lipoedema goes beyond physical changes. It can chip away at self-esteem, impact mobility, and make it harder to find clothes that feel comfortable. Many women experience frustration after unsuccessful weight loss attempts and may even feel blamed by healthcare providers.  I want you to know, I understand this struggle, and there’s a path forward to feeling better.

Naturopathic & Nutritional Approach to Lipoedema

Remember, a well-rounded support team is crucial for successful lipoedema management. This may include:

  • Doctors: Essential for diagnosis and conventional treatment options.
  • Naturopaths & Nutritionists (like me): We develop personalised nutritional plans and address underlying factors like:

✔️Gut Health: There’s growing evidence linking gut health to chronic inflammation, which plays a role in lipoedema. I specialise in gut health and can offer functional microbiome testing to identify imbalances. By addressing gut health, we can support your body’s natural anti-inflammatory response and overall well-being.

✔️Nitrogen Balance: Ensuring optimal protein intake is crucial for maintaining muscle mass.

✔️Nourishing Foods & Supplementation: We’ll discuss foods and appropriate supplements to support healthy metabolism.

✔️Hormonal Balance: Minerals play a pivotal role in hormonal health. I assess your levels to ensure optimal thyroid and metabolic function. I believe addressing hormonal imbalances is key for many women with lipoedema.

✔️Lymphatic health: Lipoedema is linked to abnormalities in blood vessels. This emphasises the importance of lymphatic support.

  • Compression garments: compression garments can help reduce swelling, a specialist will help with the best suited to you.
  • Mental Health Professionals: Managing stress and emotional well-being is vital for overall health.

Beyond Lipoedema: Understanding Co-Morbidities

Lipoedema often doesn’t come alone. Many women also experience digestive issues, thyroid problems, autoimmune, PCOS, fibromyalgia, and even conditions like ADHD. These issues can make managing lipoedema even more challenging. My approach looks at your whole health picture to find solutions that truly work for you.

Individualised Treatment is Key

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to lipoedema. By working together, we can create a plan that addresses your unique needs, underlying imbalances, and supports a healthy metabolism.

If you’re in the Melbourne area and diagnosed with or suspect lipoedema, I welcome you to book in to see me locally in Sunbury. Let’s discuss how I, as a Naturopath and Nutritionist, can support you on your journey. If you’re not local, I offer online consultations – book here

Let’s Change the Narrative

Lipoedema isn’t your fault, and effective management is possible. By embracing a team approach – including medical guidance, natural solutions, and a focus on personalised nutrition, preserving muscle mass, and overall well-being – you can work towards improved health and a better quality of life.
